Note that, in accord with the discussion of logical relations between social structure and cultural structure (considered as descriptive variables) in Chapter 2, demographistic and social structuralistic explanatory variables may or may not be linked, in a given analysis, with psychical contagionistic and cultural structuralistic explanatory variables. For example, exchange and conflict social structuralistic variables may either be offered alone, as strictly physical behavior explanations of a social phenomenon, or the analyst may also employ the further hypothesis that participants have some collective notion (whether innate or learned) of what constitutes “fairness,” “value,” “reward,” “punishment,” “threat,” and so on. The latter, social-structuralism-plus cultural-structuralism, analytic linkage is often the case, as examplified in the citations just above that implicate both imitation social structuralistic variables and cultural structuralistic “suggestion,” “modeling,” and “contagion.”

Accordingly, the next chapter will examine (1) psychical contagionism as the variety of cultural structuralism (broadly construed–see the second paragraph of the present chapter) which is most often paired with demographism, (2) consensus cultural structuralism as most often paired with unison social structuralism, (3) complementarity cultural structuralism as most often paired with exchange social structuralism, (4) dissensus cultural structuralism as most often paired with conflict social structuralism, and (5) symbolic interactionism as most often paired with functional social structuralism.
